Nail tips, how to choose the right nail tips for a durable and professional result
Choosing the right nail tips is about much more than just picking a shape you like. The right nail tip makes application easier, saves time, and provides a smoother, stronger, and more durable end result.
Whether you are a trained nail technician or do your own nails at home, it is important to choose nail tips that fit the natural nail, the technique you are working with, and the length you want to create.
At Yananails, we have developed our range with a focus on what truly makes a difference in practice. Our nail tips are available in several shapes, lengths, and profiles so that you can choose a model that suits your working method, instead of having to spend time shaping every tip by hand.
In this guide, we go through how to choose the right nail tips, the difference between the various shapes, how to find the right size, and how to apply them for the best possible durability.
What are nail tips?
Nail tips are pre-shaped extensions that are glued onto the natural nail and serve as the foundation for a nail extension. The nail is then built up with, for example, Builder Gel or acrylic, which provides the strength and durability required for daily use.
Unlike creating every shape from scratch, pre-shaped nail tips provide a significantly more even result. All nails get the same shape, length, and symmetry, which makes the work both faster and easier. For beginners, this means much of the time-consuming filing disappears, while experienced nail technicians can work more efficiently without compromising on precision.
All nail tips from Yananails are made of durable ABS plastic. The material is flexible enough to follow the natural nail's movements but at the same time stable enough to maintain its shape throughout the treatment.
Why choose pre-shaped nail tips?
One of the biggest advantages of pre-shaped nail tips is that the final shape is already there from the start.
Instead of spending time filing out the same shape on every nail, you can focus on the actual construction. The result is both faster and more even because all tips already have the same shape.
For professional nail technicians, this means a faster workflow and shorter treatment time. For those who are beginners, it becomes significantly easier to create a professional result without having to spend hours practicing filing technique.
Another major advantage is that Yananails offers several different lengths on many of our nail tips. Instead of always buying extra-long tips and then cutting away large parts of the shape, you can choose a length that is already close to your desired end result.
This ensures the original shape is preserved better, you need to make fewer adjustments, and the work goes significantly faster.
Almond nail tips
Almond is one of the most popular nail shapes and at the same time one of the hardest to create from scratch. To get a really nice result, soft, even sidewalls and a perfectly centered point are required. Even for experienced nail technicians, it takes time to file out a symmetrical Almond on every nail.
With pre-shaped Almond tips, you get the same perfect shape immediately. This saves both time and energy while all nails get an identical appearance.
The gently tapering shape also provides an elegant impression where the fingers appear longer and more elongated.
At Yananails, Almond nail tips are available in three different lengths:
- XS – perfect for those who want a short and natural nail extension.
- S – an excellent choice if you want a bit more length but still a natural look.
- M – for those who prefer longer nails or want to create more advanced designs.
By choosing the right length from the beginning, you only need to make small adjustments before you start building up the nail.
Coffin nail tips
Coffin is a modern and stylish nail shape with straight sides that gradually taper toward a straight edge. It is a popular choice for everything from solid color designs to advanced nail art.
One detail many do not think about is that the shape changes when a long Coffin tip is cut down significantly. Since the tip tapers gradually, the longer models become wider further down. If you cut away a large part of the length, the result can therefore become a tapered Square shape instead of a classic Coffin.
That is exactly why Yananails offers Coffin tips in four different lengths. (S - M - L - XL). By choosing a length that is close to your finished result, you only need to trim the tip minimally, which means the Coffin shape is preserved significantly better.
The work goes faster, filing is reduced, and the end result becomes more consistent from nail to nail.
Square nail tips, Flat or C-Curve?
Square is a timeless nail shape with straight sidewalls and a straight free edge. It is just as suitable for shorter, natural nails as it is for longer salon extensions and is a popular choice for those who want a clean, stylish, and professional result.
What many do not know is that Square tips do not only differ in length and size – they are also available with different C-curves. Choosing the right profile is just as important as choosing the right size, because the tip should follow the shape of the natural nail.
At Yananails, we offer Square nail tips in both Flat and C-Curve, so that you can choose the model that fits your client or your own nails perfectly.
Flat Square
Flat Square has a flatter C-curve and is best suited for wider or naturally flatter nails.
Because the tip follows the natural shape of the nail better, you do not have to press or force it into place. The result is a more comfortable application, better fit, and less tension in the material.
Flat Square is also a popular choice for those who like a modern, straight, and stylish look.
C-Curve Square
C-Curve Square has a more marked arch from side to side and is suitable for nails that naturally have more curvature.
When the tip follows the natural shape of the nail, the construction becomes easier and the load is distributed more evenly over the entire nail. This provides a more stable construction and a more natural end result.
So it is not about which model is best, but about which one fits the natural nail best as well as what look you are after along with the free edge.
Stiletto nail tips
Stiletto is the pointiest shape in our range and is primarily used for longer nail extensions. To be able to create a correct Stiletto, a certain length is required; on shorter nails, it becomes difficult to maintain the sidewalls without compromising the strength and proportions of the nail.
A big advantage of Stiletto tips is that they are also very versatile. Since the sidelines already taper, they can easily be reshaped into other nail shapes.
You can, for example:
- shorten them to a Coffin shape
- reshape them into Almond
- adjust the length without having to create the shape from scratch
This makes Stiletto an excellent choice even for those who do not always want to wear pointy nails, but want a flexible tip that can be used for several different designs.
Natural or Clear nail tips, which one should you choose?
In addition to different shapes, Yananails offers nail tips in two colors: Natural and Clear.
Which one you choose mainly affects how the finished design is perceived.
Clear nail tips
Clear tips are completely transparent and are perfect when you are working with glass designs, transparent Builder Gels, or advanced nail art.
Since the tip is transparent, it does not affect the color of the gel on top. Therefore, the color is rendered exactly as intended and retains its depth and clarity.
Natural nail tips
Natural tips have a milky tone that mimics the natural nail.
When working with transparent or semi-transparent Builder Gels, the natural color can shine through and create a softer depth in the design. The result is often a natural fade effect where the nail looks more lifelike.
If you want to create a discreet and natural look, Natural is therefore often the best choice.
Which color works best is ultimately a matter of what design you want to create and your personal preference.
How do you choose the right nail tip size?
Choosing the right size is one of the most important parts of getting a durable nail extension.
The nail tip should cover the nail from sidewall to sidewall without pressing against the skin.
If the tip is too narrow, the entire width of the nail won't be covered. You then lose the support from the sidewalls, which causes the nail's structure to deteriorate and increases the risk of the material lifting along the edges.
If you are between two sizes, it is therefore almost always better to choose the slightly larger tip and carefully file the sides until the fit is perfect.
You can either file the tip before gluing it on or make the final adjustments after it is in place.
If the nails grow upward or downward
Not all natural nails grow straight. Some grow upward, while others grow downward.
This can often be corrected by first shortening the natural nail as much as possible and then gluing the tip on completely straight.
As the natural nail grows out, it will eventually start following its original growth direction again. At that point, a correction may be needed at the next refill appointment, or you may need to remove and rebuild the nail from scratch.
Regardless of the nail's natural growth direction, it is important that the tip itself is always placed straight. If it is angled upward or downward, it becomes significantly harder to build a correct apex and create a strong, balanced nail.
Removing nail tips the right way is just as important as applying them correctly. Never try to pull or pry off a nail tip, as this can damage the natural nail.
How the nail tip should be removed depends on what material has been used on top of it.
If the tip has only been glued on
If you have glued on a nail tip but notice it is crooked, you can easily correct it before building with gel or acrylic.
Trim the tip and gently file away just the part that is glued. If the tip has only been attached with nail glue and no Builder Gel or acrylic has been applied on top, it can also be dissolved with acetone.
Always focus on the tip itself and avoid filing on the natural nail.
Common questions about nail tips (FAQ)
What is the difference between nail tips and nail forms?
Nail tips are glued onto the natural nail and act as a pre-made extension. Thereafter, the nail is built up using, for example, Builder Gel or acrylic.
Nail forms are instead placed under the free nail edge and used as support when the entire nail is built from scratch.
Both methods can provide professional results, but nail tips make it easier to create identical nails and often save a lot of time.
Should I choose Clear or Natural nail tips?
That depends entirely on the design you want to create.
Clear nail tips are completely transparent and do not affect the color of the Builder Gel or other products on top. They are perfect for glass effects, transparent designs, and nail art where you want the color to be rendered exactly as it is.
Natural nail tips instead have a milky tone that mimics the natural nail. When using transparent or semi-transparent Builder Gels, the color underneath can shine through and create a soft fade effect or more natural depth in the design.
Neither version is better than the other; the choice is entirely about the result you want to achieve.
How do I know if I have chosen the right size?
The nail tip should cover the entire nail from sidewall to sidewall without pressing against the skin.
If the tip is slightly too wide, you can easily file the sides until it fits perfectly.
However, avoid choosing a tip that is too narrow. You will lose the support from the sidewalls, which reduces both the nail's strength and durability.
Do I need to etch the nail tip?
Yes.
A glossy plastic surface provides significantly poorer adhesion.
By etching the entire tip, you create a surface where Builder Gel or acrylic can adhere properly, which reduces the risk of lifting.
Should Primer and Bonder be applied to the tip?
No.
Primer and Bonder are used to improve adhesion to the natural nail.
It does no harm if some product ends up on the tip, but it serves no purpose there since the tip has already been prepared by being etched.
Can I use the same nail tip multiple times?
No.
Nail tips are intended for single use.
After use, both the fit and the material properties change. For best hygiene, durability, and results, you should always use new nail tips.
If I can only buy one model, which one should I choose?
If you only want to invest in one model, we recommend Square nail tips.
Square is the most versatile shape and can easily be adapted to almost any other nail shape by filing.
- Square can be filed into Almond, Coffin, Oval, and several other shapes.
- Coffin can be filed into Almond or Stiletto, but not back into a correct Square.
- Stiletto can be filed into Almond or Coffin.
- Almond is already a finished shape and therefore offers the least flexibility if you later want to create other shapes.
If you want to be able to offer many different designs with a single pack of nail tips, Square is therefore the most flexible choice.
Summary
The right nail tips make a big difference, both for the final result and for how smoothly the work goes.
By choosing the right shape, length, profile, and size from the start, the application becomes easier, the build-up more stable, and the result more symmetrical.
